FAQ
You have questions, we have answers!
I want to become a pilot but have no idea where to start. What should I do?
Great question! Remember, all professional pilots had to start with their first flight. We offer a free Flight Training Consultation. You will sit down with one of our Instructors or our Flight School Director, where you will be able to ask all the questions you may have on flight training, while receiving guidance and insight from our experienced staff. We will provide you with answers relating to time commitment, costs, scholarships and financing options, and license requirements. Afterward, the next step would be to schedule a discovery flight with one of our instructors. During the discovery flight, you will be able to take the controls of our brand new P2008 and be guided by one of our experienced Certified Flight Instructors on a half hour training flight around Lakeland.
More Frequently Asked Questions
All flight schools will offer pilot training, however, very few will offer a career. Many students around the country are left asking what is next after completing their pilot license. Our students don’t have that problem. As a flight school that is wholly owned by a cargo airline, our students are offered a career pathway program, leading to a guaranteed job interview with our Academy post graduation from the CFI training course. Once placed as an Academy Instructor, you receive your employee number with our airline, Legends Airways.
Legends Airways, headquartered in Lakeland, Florida, is a Federal Aviation Administration Part-135 on-demand air carrier currently operating all over the United States utilizing twin turbine Saab 340 B's.
This unique combination of a flight school owned by an airline allows Legends to cater training at a professional level from the beginning to prepare students to serve as safe, responsible, and professional pilots while simultaneously providing a pipeline of skilled and competent First Officers into our air carrier operation.
We offer a Private Pilot Course, Instrument Rating Course, Commercial Pilot Course, and Instructor Pilot Courses. We also offer Tail-wheel endorsements, Biannual Flight Reviews, and Instrument Proficiency Checks.
All students that desire to enroll in a course at Legends Aviation Academy must complete the Student Application and Rental Agreement. These are made available by our Academy Dispatch staff, and we will be happy to walk you through proper completion. In addition to completing the application, you will be required to provide some documents that we must keep on file for the FAA and TSA. These include:
- A drivers license or other government issued photo ID
- An original copy of your Birth Certificate or Passport
- Any pilot certificates you have received in the past
- Medical Certificate (Not needed until solo)
- All logbooks and previously completed training (If Applicable)
- A copy of your aircraft rental insurance policy
While we do provide loaner headsets for students, it is recommended that you invest in one early on in your training. We also recommend an I-Pad for our instrument and commercial students.
Our office is opened and staffed by our Academy Dispatch Team and Instructors Monday through Saturday from 8 A.M. to 7 P.M. and on Sunday's 8 A.M to 4 P.M. However, training happens 7 days a week, and our instructors are available to fly as early as 7 A.M. and as late as 11 P.M.
While we do not have a uniform for students, we do recommend you wear appropriate clothes and attire for the time and season you are training in. Florida experiences very warm summers, so we recommend you wear something comfortable while you fly. We also require closed toe shoes for all training flights.
We prioritize safety and preach responsibility for all students and staff. Your first lesson at our academy will cover our Safety Procedures and Policies as well as a review of our dispatch procedures and self-assessment form. You will utilize the training you receive in this first lesson, for every lesson that will follow.
Both Part-141 and Part-61 lead to the exact same licensure and pilot ratings, however, the training requirements and structure differ between both programs.
Part-141 schools are required to go through a rigorous Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspection and have a proven track record for success to be certified under this rule. Part-141 students are required to follow a prescribed flight training syllabus that is approved by the FAA. Because the syllabus is structured and the school is approved, the FAA allows Part-141 students to complete their licenses and ratings at lower minimum times than Part-61 requirements.
Part-61 allows pilots to pursue their training in a less structured environment as opposed to Part-141. Part-61 training requires a higher amount of flight hours than the course minimums of a Part-141 Syllabus. However, this type of training allows for a more flexible training schedule for students.
We recommend students explore both options and we will assist you with picking a course that best meets your needs.
All of our courses are billed as a Pay-as-you-go model. What this means for you, is that you will not be required to pay any large upfront course costs or deposits. Rather, you pay for each lesson based on the time and aircraft you flew in. This allows you to spread the cost throughout your training. We also offer financing options for our students to also help with the expense of training.
The training duration will depend on your commitment and study habits. The average training duration is Private License: 2-3 Months, Instrument Rating: 2-3 Months, & Commercial License: 3-5 Months. We will work with your schedule to accommodate your training needs.
We allow properly certified pilots to rent our aircraft for pleasure flights. Call us for more information on how to become a renter.
Yes! Periodically we hold open houses and events for prospective students and renters. We also hold student appreciation days as well!
